Community Interaction

Neighborhood Watch

Neighborhood Watch is the basis for an ongoing dialogue and cooperative relationship with neighbors, law enforcement and other city and county agencies. Interested members of the community regularly contact the Crime Prevention Unit of the police department for assistance in starting a program in their neighborhood. Upon contact, the Crime Prevention Officer will explain that neighborhood watch involves:

  • Neighbors getting to know each other, and working together in a program of mutual assistance.

  • Citizens being trained to safely recognize and report suspicious activities in their neighborhoods.

  • Crime prevention strategies such as home security, Operation Identification and others being implemented by citizens.

  • Neighbors being apprised of crime conditions in their neighborhoods.

Business Watch

Business Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of business owners, managers, and employees in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime in their work environments. Business Watch is:

  • Designed to protect you, your business, and your employees.

  • Designed to provide a networking system between businesses that quickly and accurately disseminates information.

  • Created to establish partnerships between local businesses and law enforcement.

  • Here to offer the business community educational training in prevention measures such as deterring robbery, shoplifting, personal safety, Internet theft, and financial crimes.

Crime Prevention Principles

Natural Surveillance -The placement of physical features, activities and people in such a way as to maximize visibility.

  • Natural Access Control -The physical guidance of people coming and going from a space by the judicial placement of entrances, exits, fencing, landscaping and lighting.

  • Territorial Reinforcement - The use of physical attributes that express ownership, such as well defined property lines, fences, signage, landscaping, lighting, etc.

  • Maintenance - A well-maintained home, building or community creates a sense of ownership, which helps deter criminals.

  • Activity Support - To encourage interaction by putting activities in public spaces that are intended for use by residents and other legitimate users and therefore discourages criminal acts.
